چکیده

Disturbances of the space environment are a critical aspect of Space Weather and of the NSF Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) program. Other than for the the stormtime ring current, which forms within the inner magnetosphere, the primary space weather disturbances occur within the plasma sheet of the magnetotail and couple along magnetic field lines to the auroral ionosphere. At the time of inception of the GEM Tail-Substorm (TS) campaign, the substorm was the primary type of plasma sheet disturbance that was generally recognized. Hence, the Strategies for the Tail-Substorm Campaign (ed. by W. J. Hughes, Published by Boston University), completed in July 1993, emphasized the study of substorms, though it was also recognized that there are large temporal variations in plasma sheet flow, which were thought to play an important aspect of tail dynamics.

Prelude to THEMIS tail conjunction study

A close conjunction of several satellites (LANL, GOES, Polar, Geotail, and Cluster) distributed from the geostationary altitude to about 16 RE downstream in the tail occurred during substorm activity as indicated by global auroral imaging and ground-based magnetometer data. This constellation of satellites resembles what is planned for the THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macroscopic Interact...

Cross-tail current evolution during substorm dipolarization

We examine evolution of the cross-tail current during substorm current disruption/dipolarization using observations from two satellites in the near-Earth magnetotail at the downtail distances of 8–9RE. By choosing times when these two satellites are separated, mainly in the north–south distance in the tail current sheet, precise determination of current density in the layer embedded between the...

Tail reconnection triggering substorm onset.

Magnetospheric substorms explosively release solar wind energy previously stored in Earth's magnetotail, encompassing the entire magnetosphere and producing spectacular auroral displays. It has been unclear whether a substorm is triggered by a disruption of the electrical current flowing across the near-Earth magnetotail, at approximately 10 R(E) (R(E): Earth radius, or 6374 kilometers), or by ...

Transition from substorm growth to substorm expansion phase as observed with a radial configuration of ISTP and Cluster spacecraft

Transition from the growth phase to the substorm expansion during a well-isolated substorm with a strong growth phase is investigated using a unique radial (THEMISlike) spacecraft constellation near midnight, including the probing of the tail current at ∼16RE with Cluster, of the transition region at ∼9RE with Geotail and Polar, and of the inner region at 6.6RE with two LANL spacecraft. The act...

Correlation between ground-based observations of substorm signatures and magnetotail dynamics

We present a substorm event study using the four Cluster spacecraft in combination with ground-based instruments, in order to perform simultaneous observations in the ionosphere and magnetotail. We show good correlation between substorm signatures on the ground and in the magnetotail, even though data from the northern-ground and southern-tail hemispheres are compared. During this event ground-...
